Insy-Winsy V.S. Super-Duper
May 24th, 2007
I went shopping the other day to pick up the Lagos ‘Mabe’ Pearl Bangle I bought as my Mother’s Day gift. As I was making my way through the mall I noticed how many women were sporting bags that cluttered their entire ensemble or didn’t quite accentuate the look that they were going for. At that point it dawned on me how far-flung trends are this season with nothing labeled as out-dated as long as it is worn well, and it is no wonder that all of these fabulously dressed gals are lacking that last bit of oomph the bag always adds.
The most repeated travesty was the women who were going for the ultra-fem look with their day dresses or sheer, flowy blouses and skirts supporting large totes. Totes are hot, and there is no doubt about it, but when you slip into an all out feminine attire you want to look as simply understated and framed as one can much like this Phoebe
Couture model, and the tote would add a bulky touch to the mix. Something smaller and shapely like this Prada Clutch would compliment the flow of the look much better. Not to mention it will be a nice little break for your shoulders from not having to carry around all that weight for a day! This is not to say that you absolutely cannot match a tote to a skirt or dress ensemble because Misha Barton pulled it off wonderfully minus the cap! The key is to pair the tote with pieces that are not super feminine; something like a funky mini dress would be perfect.
But a tote is much more flattering and functional in a casual look. It lends itself beautifully to pair with denim and is the perfect accent to go along with the shorts obsession. It will add symmetry and charm to any street chic outfit quickly and easily. Sienna Miller had the right idea when she threw together this adorably fashionable look by pairing an empire waist top with a unique patterned pair of shorts and throwing on an oversized tote before heading out to go shopping. If Sienna is anything like the shoppers Kelley Styring recently surveyed than it’s a good thing that she has a tote by her side. It has just the perfect amount of space for all the extras that we insist on having by our sides, all the necessities that let us to save the day, and the primping supplies that allow us to look glamorous all day long.

Thank you for referencing my recent study “In Your Purse: Archaeology of the American Handbag.” This study interviewed 100 women and catalogued the contents of their purses — more than 6,670 items weighing more than 300 lbs. More information on this study can be found at www.inyourpurse.com or directly from me at kelley.styring@insightfarm.com.
