Hollywood Goes Humanitarian
May 28th, 2007
Founded in 1985, American Foundation for AIDS Research (amfAR) became a key player in the world’s fight against AIDS/HIV; amfAR spends millions of dollars funding research yearly. A noble cause considering that 40,000 Americans will become newly infected annually and these statistics are far more alarming in other parts of the world. Previously this month many Hollywood A-listers bestowed a helping hand for this charitable cause at the 14th Cinema Against AIDS gathering held in the incomparable Cannes, France. Sharon Stone, Harvey Weinstein, Matt Damon, Roberto Cavalli, Eva Mendes, Kurt Russell, Diego Luna, Michelle Yeoh, Dita Von Teese, Kerry Washington, and of course the talk of the night George Clooney all came out to show their support.
The Ocean’s 13 crew was asked to auction off a yacht vacation package, and ended up throwing in a lip lock with heartthrob George Clooney for $350,000. Oh yeah, way worth that price in my book! Other celebrities did their part to aid the fundraiser benefit. The hostess of the evening, Sharon Stone, launched the night’s festivities by auctioning her Louis Vuitton vanity case designs for $95,000 a piece. Roberto Cavalli and Elle Macpherson sold a Milan Fashion Show Package for $200,000, which included two tickets to attend six prominent show cases, a handmade Sergio Rossi crocodile handbag exclusively designed for amfAR accompanied by custom-made shoes. Whoever bought that package is the luckiest person alive according to me! What I wouldn’t do to personally attend Versace, Fendi, Cavalli debuts in Milan! Roberto Cavalli’s participation didn’t end there for the evening; he auctioned off a collaborative art piece co-produced by Mario Testino for a whopping $400,000. The only bid of the evening that out did the sale of the collaborative art piece was a Chopard Necklace set designed with diamonds, pink pearls, and briolette sapphires deposited into 18K white gold. The ending bid for the luxe masterpiece was $500,000. The evening rendered a nice little turnout for amfAR just as years past. I can’t wait to see what great prizes are auctioned at amfAr Rocks scheduled to be held in New York on September 24, 2007.
