Awaken
June 13th, 2007
So, my sweet tooth dug into an entire carton of chocolate fudge galore. It was a girl’s night in, and chocolate can kick those worries to the curb and quick. As usual we started the night off catching up on all the drama of the week, and then hit the heavy duty stuff-watching the chick flicks. Amongst the pile was Tuesday’s with Morrie and Conversations with God.
As the minutes ticked away and the stories unwound, I came to realize that these films were not made for the purpose of entertainment but rather for awakening the mind and soul. I spent all night thinking about the lessons I was presented with, and decided that it was time for change. I can’t remember the last time I stopped to appreciate the beauty of a sunset or smell the scents of spring but I can vividly describe the hustle of the streets I walk to work or the smell of the air polluted by the mixture of uncountable perfumes, exhaust from passing by commuters, and the blend of various coffees.
But I want to change that! I am not saying go knock on the door of the multi-million dollar self help industry because the truth is that the only thing you need to change is the want accompanied by a little determination. It sounds quite cliché but your life is a reflection of the things that you have wanted and worked to get! The average American wastes four hours and thirty-six minutes daily, according to Neilson Marketing, in front of the television. Spend that time with the people you love or doing something that is nurturing to the reality that is you. But, then arises the question that age old question who essentially are you; we can only answer that question for ourselves so stop looking for it elsewhere. The societal norms that govern our being only bind our social behavior; your individual presence is free to be molded into what you want to be! Joy is the most precious gift of life, so bask in the moments that are full of life because we are not guaranteed a tomorrow.
