Tragedy Strikes fashion Industry

June 19th, 2007

June 17th marked a loss filled day for the world of fashion for world renowned designer, Gianfranco Ferre , lost his life this day.  Gianfranco Ferre, Italian designer, died of brain hemorrhage in Milan.  He was admitted to San Raffaele hospital on Friday, and passed on two days later on Sunday at the age of sixty-two.

Ferre, better known as “the architect of fashion” led a very fruitful and success filled life.  After graduating from Milan Politechnico with a degree in architecture, he traveled to the mystic lands of India where he first became inspired to journey into the land of fashion.  Baila was his first fashion endeavor, but in 1978 Gianfranco Ferre was born as his signature label.  Ferre’s trademark was his awe-inspiring motif of form and structure with his most noted pieces including the fluttery white blouse and sheek pant suit.  Ferre’s business-suits paired with luxe briefcases quickly became a favorite ensemble for all independent, self empowered women across the globe; Gianfranco Ferre has always knew how mesh fashion with business. It was in 1989, though, that he embarked on the venture that brought him the fame and recognition that he enjoyed. In 1989 LVMH Moët Hennessy Louis Vuitton’s chairman appointed Ferre the lead designer of the house of Christian DiorDior enjoyed the company of Ferre up until his departure in 1996 after leading the Spring 1997 collection. Up until recently he had been working on expanding Gianfranco Ferre despite that he had sold it to It Holding several years back.

Funeral services were held today, June 19, 2007, at Basilica di San Magno. The fashion industry has lost one of its most prominent visionaries, and he will be missed undoubtedly! Just as Ferre would have wanted the Spring 2008 menswear collection will be debuted in Milan on Sunday the day of June 2nd for he understood above all that time is of essence.
