Dressing For Work

I’m going to let you in on a little secret…I am a horoscope fiend! I am completely aware of how cheesy they can be, but yet I find myself subscribed to each and everyone out there. My morning starts with a nice toasty Cappuccino cup and the horoscope section of the Indianapolis Star. My intuitive capabilities are expected to be at a rise in the month of July. Just as expected I have had odd incidents all week- the funniest of which was blurting out an affair that was concealed up to that point. Seriously, though, I was feeling quite conscious about clothing I was wearing in professional settings, and lo-and-behold the shaft dropped about the lax nature of the dress code. Okay, that one can be less credited to my intuitive hipth and more to the power of observation. It is an old age confrontation on how much clothing can you go without during the summer months.
So, I’m going to break down a few dress code do’s and don’ts that can save you from an unpleasant sit down with your boss.
#1 Dresses seem to be the IT thing this summer, so let’s start with that. The rule of thumb for dresses is quite simple in fact. Simply do not put on anything that would make you feel right at home in a nightclub or at the beach side. Those scenes tend to call for more of flesh baring and seductive ensemble, which are major NO-NOs for even casual dress codes.
Do:
DON’T:
#2 Next, we’re going to tackle skirts; the appropriate length of a hemline has been the same for decades now- let’s say it together: “Knee Length.” Just pretend that you’ve still got that teacher lurking with her yard stick, and you’re good to go! It may not be the trend but we have to remember that fashion statements have their place, and professionalism it’s.
#3 Tanks and camisoles are life savers for those days you just want to be comfy, but they are only acceptable at work under one condition- they are layered underneath a nice cardigan, jacket, or fancier top.
#4 Now, let’s get to the bejeweled trend that is heating up the scene lately. Yea, I agree that it is totally HOT, but again there is a time and place for it. If you have a conservative workplace than I guess you’ve got the green light, but keep in mind that less will be more. It will flaunt your fashion sense, but not get your boss on your case.
#5 Shoes- No matter how cute you think your heels are or how badly you want to show them off; put a hold on it until your next luncheon. Pumps are the staple of a professional work environment, and there is no room for flip flops, six inch stilettoes, or sexy sandals. On the contrary, though, in a more relaxed office space the cute new wedges out and sandals can be a nice way to flaunt your fashion charm.
#6 And, handbags! It may be seem silly to even bring this up, but let me tell you I have seen some fiascos on this matter many a times. Clutches have always been exclusively for evening events, and despite the trend changing up a bit in recent day I would not risk it. You have to be super bold to carry it off because of its reputation as an evening bag. Super huge Totes like this Prada Frame Bag, although is all the rave on the Couture 2008 runway is not so hot in the office. Something a little more low key like this Furla Shoulder Bag or Medium Tote by Nannini would be a better bet.
Cosmopolitan has many more tips in addition to these that can be very helpful when throwing together your work week ensembles. Check them out in their July 2007 issue!
